Line Operations Safety Audit Training and Consulting

The Aviation Consulting Group provides LOSA training and consulting for aviation operators that would like to implement a Flight, Maintenance, or Ramp LOSA program within their company. In addition to LOSA principles and techniques, our LOSA training course also presents an in-depth look at Threat and Error Management (TEM). Because TEM is the basis of LOSA, a solid understanding of TEM is a prerequisite for valid LOSA observations.

General Concepts of LOSA

The FAA defines a LOSA as "a formal process that requires expert and highly trained observers to observe operations in real-time and to collect safety-related data on environmental conditions, operational complexity, and human performance. Confidential data collection and non-jeopardy assurance are fundamental to the process." These data provide a peek into the real-time operating environment and are complementary to other proactive/predictive safety data collection programs such as FOQA, ASAP, and MOQA. All of these programs will be tied into your eventual, or current, functional Safety Management System.

The Relationship Between IATA, IOSA, and LOSA

All airlines that are, or are intending to be, listed in the IOSA Registry should have a LOSA program in place. The IATA Operational Safety Audit (IOSA) is the benchmark for global safety management in airlines. Click this extract from the IATA manual for additional information.
