Airline (Part 121) Operations

Capt. Dan Mahoney, M.S.

Captain Mahoney’s 31 years at US Airways (26 years as a line pilot) give him insights into many problems that beset the airlines. Operational problems are dominating the headlines today, but labor relations and retention are also a part of the equation. A study of history and human factors can address these issues that repeat themselves so often in this industry.

Captain Mahoney has been on leave from US Airways for 5 years. He is still a current member of the Air Line Pilot’s Association and is up to date on current labor issues. Captain Mahoney started his career as a Certified Flight Instructor, Commuter Airline Pilot, Cargo Pilot, and Corporate Pilot and then was hired by Piedmont Aviation, the parent of Piedmont Airlines, in 1976. Piedmont Airlines merged with US Air in 1989 and changed their name to US Airways under the leadership of Steven Wolf.

Captain Mahoney is the Program Manager of the Airbus 320 and 330 programs for a large, Miami based simulator training facility. He benefits from the knowledge shared by pilots who train at his facility and go on to work at Airlines all over the world, including India and China.

Captain Mahoney received flight training and an Associate Degree in Aerospace Technologies from the State University of New York at Farmingdale, N.Y., a Bachelor’s Degree in Aviation Administration from Parson’s College of Fairfield, Iowa, and Masters Degree in Aviation Science at Everglades University in Boca Raton, Florida. Captain Mahoney is rated on five different Boeing Jet models and has current Proficiency Checks on the Airbus 320 and 330 models. He is a Master Certified Flight Instructor and remains current on general aviation aircraft. He is a member of the FAA “FAASTEAM” safety program and teaches Safety Seminars on a regular basis. He is also on staff for Everglades University in the Aviation Science Program.
